About

I’ve worked in a seaside arcade, as a record salesman, a decorator, a merchant banker, a marine and a retailer. I was once shot by terrorists and winched from the jungle into a helicopter and flown to hospital. I live with my wife in Bucks.

I write or do something connected to writing almost every day. When I’m not writing I spend most of my time with my family. I read a lot, listen to music and go to gigs, watch movies and try to look after my garden. I often cook and I admit to being fond of good food. I like all things to do with wildlife and care about endangered species and what we are doing to them and the world – see my links page.

If asked who is my favourite author, I can’t give a consistent answer. It changes all the time. Currently it’s Jonathan Franzen - I’ve just read his book Freedom. If I like a book, I find I’ll look for others from the same author. I read books, as in a book you hold, and in ebook format. I’m currently reading To the End of The Land by David Grossman and find it deeply moving.

Other books I’ve recently read
Freedom - Jonathan Franzen
Breakfast at Tiffany’s  - Truman Capote
The Plot against America – Philip Roth
Back to Bologna – Michael Dibdin
The Way Home – George Peleconos

My music collection is a mixture of stuff of my generation and new music. I tend to go for singer/songwriters with interesting original lyrics. I listen to jazz and swing now and again, particularly new treatments of old standards. I’ve listed a few of the newer singer/songwriters I particularly like.

Laura Marling
Johnny Flynn
Fanfarlo
Hawk
Ray La Montagne
Devon Sproule
Joan as a Police Woman
Josh Ritter
Lisa Mitchell
Missy Higgins
