Told through the voice of Guy, I’ve attempted to delve into the tortured and troubled mind of an amnesiac; his testing relationship with his wife, Kathryn - a stranger to him - and his recognition that he may never remember his past. In an intense way, I’ve described the moment Guy’s memory returns, his acceptance that he attempted to murder his wife and his fear when he discovers his wife’s lover is out to kill him. I’ve tried to be candidly descriptive, laying bare Guy’s thoughts and emotions right up to the stark and brutal ending.
Storyline
Guy Middleton is a thirty-eight year old crime writer. He has been married to Kathryn for five years. They have no children. Kathryn is PA to Leonard Castsimatidis, outwardly the flamboyant head of an import and export business but in reality and unknown to Guy a ruthless gangster linked to the Marseilles mafia. Guy and Kathryn spend most of their spare time with Leonard, Joe, his assistant and Jeni, Kathryn’s sister and once Joe’s partner. Jeni also works for Leonard. What follows is a brief description, in Guy’s words, of his traumatic last twelve months.
About a year ago I had a car crash and, as a result, lost my memory. My wife, Kathryn, was in the car. She survived unhurt, but I’d been intending to kill her. In my book I describe how I attempted to kill Kathryn a second time, grappled with life as an amnesiac and was, later, reintroduced to her and our four close friends, discovering their disturbing and frightening life. I’ve held nothing back. In as much detail as I can remember, I’ve told of the scary life-threatening time leading up to my memory return, the reconciliation with my wife and the bizarre and chilling conclusion of my story.
